Public Schools: What Should Be Done? by Bill Floore

The goal of public schools is a good education. Students need to be competent in reading, writing, and mathematics. To meet this goal the following objectives need to be met:
  1. The majority of funding needs to go to the classrooms. This needs to be measured and monitored by the school boards to make sure it is really happening.
  2. Classroom sizes need to be kept small. Find other places to make cuts, but do not increase class sizes. A kindergarten ought not to have more than 15 students; first grade ought not to have more than 20 students, third through fifth grades oust not to have more than 25 students; sixth through eighth grades ought not to have more than 30 students; high schools ought not to have more than 35 students.
  3. Attract, hire, and keep the very best teachers. Performance needs to be based on the growth of the students as determined by standardized tests.
  4. Provide the classrooms with  the best text books, work books, and teaching materials.
  5. Hold people accountable.
  6. Maintain high standards. Put the students in the level they are learning, but only switch for math. Do not have leveling grades.
  7. Have only three kinds of schools; magnet schools, K-8 schools, and high schools.
