Jewel, Hillfarm, Sable Soft, Cherry Valley, Mary Dunbar, Turnstyle, Grand Bazaar, Jewel-Osco

When I started at Jewel they were closed on Sundays and after six on Saturdays. They did not sell meat after 6 P.M. on week days. The stores had from 12 to 20 butchers breaking down cattle. Butchers couldn't serve on juries. Bleach was sold in glass bottles. We received our pay in cash in an envelop each week. I made$1.40 an hour. On a Saturday all registers would be going with a bagger on each. Our competition was A & P, National Tea, and Dominick's. My first store was on Belmont and Sheffield in Chicago. That was 1962. Our headquarters was in Melrose Park. We were a private company.
